Most people think that knowledge is power. In reality, knowledge is only potential power. Taking action based on the application of that knowledge is power.

If you’re like most people who are trying to create or find more happiness in life, you’ve been learning as much as you can about the pursuit of happiness. Although it’s important to understand happiness, that’s only one aspect of finding happiness.

Your road to happiness will require planning. If you’re in a miserable situation, how do you get out of that situation? If you’re usually not a happy person, how do you make a habit of being happy? What happiness goals do you want to accomplish?

Action is essential to your pursuit of happiness. It’s not enough that you want to be a happier person. It’s not enough that you learn as much as you can about the pursuit of happiness. It’s not enough that you understand happiness and you have a plan to find happiness. If you don’t take action, nothing will happen… nothing will change in your life.

According to the dictionary, a habit is an acquired behavior pattern that is regularly followed until it has become almost involuntary. How do you acquire a happiness habit?

In order to make a habit of being happy, you have to train for it. Why? If you want a new job or career, don’t you train for it? If you want to learn a new sports activity, don’t you train for it? If you want to learn a new hobby, don’t you train for it?

No matter what new skill you’re trying to learn–if you want to get better at it–you have to train for it… you have to practice.

This is probably the biggest mistake that most people make about finding happiness. They learn as much as they can about the pursuit of happiness… and then they don’t do anything else about it. They think that “knowledge is power.” So, they assume that knowing about the pursuit of happiness will automatically help them find happiness.

Don’t make that mistake.

Knowledge or insight is NOT enough.  Your new knowledge will not help you unless you put it to work. You can make a habit of being happy by practicing. By training yourself to find happiness, you’re taking advantage of new scientific findings in brain plasticity or neuroplasticity. Your brain changes when you make a habit of being happy–when you change your mind and change your life.

If you have knowledge about the pursuit of happiness, you only have the potential power to find happiness. You have to take action based on what you’ve learned. In order to internalize the changes you want to make in your life and make them permanent–in order to make a habit of being happy–you have to train for it… you have to practice.
