It’s funny that most people have goals for success in their career, but many do not really think about their goals for personal success in life… for their happiness.

I have to confess I used to be one of those people. Many years ago, I attended a seminar about setting goals for success. When we were asked about our goals for happiness, I was shocked that I had nothing to say! I had planned for everything else, but I was going to leave my happiness up to chance.

I have to say that I did have some idea of what I wanted to accomplish in life. I knew that some of those things would make me happy after I accomplished them. But, that was it. I didn’t really have any specific goals for happiness. I just had specific career goals. I guess I just thought that once I reached my goals, happiness would be just around the corner and it would just come to me. How silly! Unfortunately, by not planning, most people “pursue” happiness this way  –  they just wait for happiness to come to them.

That was many years ago. Since then, I’ve had lots of time to think about this “pursuit of love, happiness and success” issue. I’ve come to realize that the first order of business for anyone involved in this pursuit is to make some decision about your definition of personal success. It means different things to different people. But, unless you decide what “success” means to you  –  it’s something that will be very difficult to achieve. It’s like running a race without a finish line or aiming for something that’s actually a moving target.

What is your definition of personal success? Is it about finding true happiness in your life? Is it about finding true love? Is it about having a deep connection with your family… your friends… your community? Is it about having a fulfilling career? Is it about becoming wealthy? Would you have to achieve fulfillment in every aspect of your life to feel successful? What if you could only achieve one of the things you consider important in life… what would be that *one thing* that can make up for whatever is lacking in your life  –  the one thing that would still be *enough* to sustain you for the rest of your life? Something that would probably allow you to say at the end of your life: I have lived a happy life because I have (blank). Have you thought about this?

Figure out your goals for love, happiness and success. Once you set your goals, you can achieve them more effectively. You will find that just moving closer toward achieving your goals can make you happier. It sure beats staying in a rut.

What is it that you’re longing for? Do it now… start following your bliss!
