Did you know that there’s a hidden job market? The good news is that the hidden job market is much larger than the advertised job market. And the bad news? Most job seekers do not know about this job market; so, they don’t look for these non-advertised jobs and few people apply for them. If you’re currently searching for a job, what’s bad news for the majority of job seekers is great news for you!

Most job seekers are looking for jobs in newspaper classifieds, job fairs and job sites online. As you probably already know, the competition is intense for any job being advertised.

Taking the path less traveled by other job seekers… and getting creative in finding jobs in the hidden job market might help you find employment sooner rather than later.

How large is the hidden job market?

A whopping 80% of all jobs are filled without employer advertising. Job applicants get these jobs through recommendations and referrals from associates, family or friends of employers as well as company employees, vendors or some other company-associated contacts.

How do you find out about these hidden jobs… or even better, how do you get recommendations and referrals from employer contacts or company-associated contacts?

If you’re thinking of networking, you’re right! If you can comfortably and effectively network with others, then you can easily use your networking skills to find these non-advertised jobs. Hopefully, you can also get recommendations and referrals.

My own experience with the hidden job market…

After grad school, I had such a tough time finding a job.  I made the huge mistake of only applying for advertised jobs.  I didn’t really know much about the hidden job market. After over 6 months of being unemployed, I was really scared and hurting financially. Being unemployed can be stressful and emotionally draining.  I was so worried about paying for my student loans and other bills as well as having enough money to pay for the rent and groceries.  I also had my young son to take care of.  So, I was really desperate to find a good job. Eventually,  I started applying for non-advertised jobs.  Within a week, I had an interview… and within a couple a weeks, I landed a well-paying job!

I will never forget that time in my life.  It was very scary.  I’m sympathetic to anyone going through what I’ve been through.  I know that these tough economic times are devastating for so many individuals and families.

I’ll continue to share whatever job search-related information I can find.  I hope these tips and tools will help you with your job search.

I also wrote an article about creative ways to find advertised and company-posted jobs.  If you want to check it out, here’s the link: How to Find A Job During Tough Economic Times.

Next post will be about easy networking for people who are networking-challenged. Yes, I’m a member of the club.

I will also write about the hidden job market in healthcare. Since this is my field, I can give you specific examples and tools to help you find a job in, hopefully, a few days or weeks.

Good luck with your job hunting!
